“This season is about bringing light to the people around us”-P.M. Justin Trudeau

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Christmas:

“Merry Christmas, Canada!

“Today, our family joins Christians across the country and around the world to celebrate the birth of Christ.

“It’s a time to spread joy and cheer, appreciate our blessings, and honour traditions – whether that’s opening presents, decorating the Christmas tree, sharing a meal together, or setting aside a couple of cookies for Santa.

“We’re also well into winter, from coast to coast to coast – and here in Canada, we’ve always known how to smile through the cold days and long nights. This time of year, that Canadian spirit shines through most – because this season is about bringing light to the people around us.

“We also know this is a difficult time for some families. For Canadian Armed Forces members who are far from home, it’s just one example of the many sacrifices you and your families make. We’re thinking of you, and we’re grateful for everything you do for Canadians.

“And we’re thinking too of hardworking Canadian families who might be struggling to make ends meet this Christmas. Our government is working hard to make things a little easier for you  Continue reading ““This season is about bringing light to the people around us”-P.M. Justin Trudeau”

‘Yoga is India’s gift to the world for health and peace’ – P.M. Narendra Modi

At the ‘Yoga for Peace’  event during the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, India’s Prime Minister said the practice connects everyone to happiness.

“I arrived here just a few hours ago after travelling over 15,000 kilometers in more than 24 hours. And because of your love and enthusiasm, I did not feel at all that I am outside India,” the Prime Minister said in Hindi.

Praising the organisers of the “Yoga for Peace” event, he said it’s hard to think of a better name.

“Yoga keeps both your body and mind healthy. It strengthens your body and keeps your mind at peace,” Modi, who attended the G20 Summit, said.

“Yoga is India’s gift to the world for health, wellness and peace. It connects us with wellness and happiness. Yoga is bridging the vast distance between India and Argentina. It is connecting the two countries and their people,” Prime Minister Modi said.

While Argentina has a keen interest in India’s art, music and dance, there are lakhs of fans of Argentine soccer players in our country. Maradona’s name has become part of our daily conversations and sayings, Prime Minister Modi said.

“It’s a matter of pride and happiness for us that Argentina is hosting the G20 summit. Issues such as global economy, sustainable development, climate change, and fugitive economic offenders will be discussed during the summit. These are in the interest of the entire world, and not just India and Argentina,” he said.

On the sidelines of the G20 summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. The two discussed India’s role in addressing climate change globally. Continue reading “‘Yoga is India’s gift to the world for health and peace’ – P.M. Narendra Modi”

“We honour every Canadian who has served and sacrificed so we may live free”-P.M. Justin Trudeau

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Remembrance Day:

“Today, we honour every Canadian who has served and sacrificed so we may live free. We fall silent to acknowledge a debt we can never repay. We remember.

“One hundred years ago today, the Armistice between Germany and the Allies ended the First World War. As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, we also mark Canada’s Hundred Days.

“During the ‘100 Days Offensive,’ Canadians spearheaded attacks that overcame the last lines of German defences and paved the way to final victory. These soldiers were the face and strength of a young country that sacrificed beyond measure and never faltered in its duty.

“Their bravery garnered the respect and admiration of the world, and marked a turning point for Canada. We began to define ourselves as a country – a force on the world stage, confident, and in control of our own destiny.

“Since then, every generation of Canadians has stepped forward to serve. Thousands have fought, and continue to fight, to defend the principles of peace, freedom, and democracy around the world.

“At 11:00 am, I call on all Canadians to observe the two minutes of silence. We remember every Canadian who has sacrificed their future for generations beyond their own. We stand today, free and at peace, because of them.

“Lest we forget.” Continue reading ““We honour every Canadian who has served and sacrificed so we may live free”-P.M. Justin Trudeau”

Toronto’s Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden wins international achievement award

The City of Toronto, in partnership with local community groups, has won the Downtown Achievement Award of Excellence in Public Space for the innovative Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden. The installation was selected from among 17 qualified submissions in the same category.

The community transformed the intersection into a landmark and gathering space that celebrates the area’s Indigenous history and symbolizes the aspiration to positive international relationships.

“The Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden is the result of hard work and vision by neighbourhood residents, business owners, volunteers and others,” said the Councillor for Ward 14. “I would like to thank the selection committee at the International Downtown Association for recognizing the work of Roncesvalles community and for celebrating the vibrancy of our city.”

The International Downtown Association (IDA) will officially present the award during the IDA Conference and Tradeshow in San Antonio, Texas from October 24 to 26. The Public Space category recognizes capital improvements that have enhanced the urban design, transportation methods, physical function, or economic viability of downtown and the community.

Planning for renewal of the space was initiated by the Friends of the Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden community group along with the Roncesvalles Village Business Improvement Area, and the garden officially opened in June 2016. Representatives of the Mississaugas of the Credit were engaged and a number of local volunteers donated their time to reimagine the space. Ontario Ban on Door-to-Door Sales in Effect as of March 1st

Starting March 1, 2018, Ontario will ban unsolicited, door-to-door sales of certain household appliances to better protect consumers from aggressive and misleading contracting at home.

Businesses will only be able to enter into a contract in the consumer’s home if the consumer has contacted the business ahead of time and invited them into their home for the purpose of entering into a contract. Contracts that are in violation of the new rules relating to door-to-door contract solicitation will be considered void, and consumers will be able to keep the goods and services with no obligations.

The new rules will apply to:

  • Air cleaners
  • Air conditioners
  • Air purifiers
  • Duct cleaning services
  • Furnaces
  • Water filters
  • Water heaters
  • Water purifiers
  • Water softeners
  • Water treatment devices
  • Bundles of these goods and services

In addition, businesses will be required to keep a record of how contact with the consumer entering the contract was made, and all contracts signed in the home for these goods and services will also have a 10-day cooling-off period, allowing consumers to cancel the contract for any reason without penalty. “Merry Christmas, Canada!”-P.M. Justin Trudeau

“In 2017, people across Canada gave us much reason to be proud, and showed us the strength in our diversity. Canadians are neighbours helping neighbours, sharing warmth, compassion, and generosity—not just at Christmas, but all year round.

“For Christians around the world, this season is a time to celebrate Jesus Christ and his message of compassion. For all of us, it is a chance to come together to give thanks for everything that unites us.

“As the 150th anniversary of Confederation draws to a close, all of us have a role to play in shaping our world for the better. In the New Year, and throughout the years to come, let’s commit to making a difference. Whether by lending a hand to a neighbour, or volunteering for a cause we believe in, let’s give generously, and live out the values that bring us together.

“Let’s also reach out and listen—to those next door, across the aisle, and at the dinner table. Building a better world starts where we work and live, in our communities, and at home.

“During the holidays, I also ask you take a moment to remember our brave servicewomen and men, and their families. They make extraordinary sacrifices to keep us safe.

“From our family to yours, Hadrien, Ella-Grace, Xavier, Sophie, and I wish you joy, health, love, and peace this holiday season. Merry Christmas.”
