Global T20 Canada Partners with SickKids for the Official Charity

Global T20 Canada and Bombay Sports Company Ltd. are pleased to announce SickKids Foundation as the Official Charity of the League.

Established in 1972, SickKids Foundation raises funds on behalf of The Hospital for Sick Children
(SickKids) and is the largest charitable funder of child health research, learning and care in Canada.
Philanthropy is a critical source of funding for SickKids – one of the world’s foremost paediatric health-
care institutions. Thanks to donors, in the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2018, SickKids Foundation
invested over $140 million in child health research, learning and care.
“We rely on the community and are grateful to Global T20 Canada and Bombay Sports Company Ltd. for
their support,” said Katie McHugh-Escobar, Director, Community Partnerships, SickKids Foundation. “The
funds raised during this tournament will go towards our SickKids VS Limits campaign, the largest in
Canadian health care history, to help us build a renewed SickKids with cutting-edge operating suites,
more room for families and more room for the innovative technologies that will deliver better outcomes for
children in Canada and around the world.”
Global T20 Canada is a premiere international cricket league featuring the top cricket players from around
the world. From July 25 until August 11, the League will host 22 matches at the CAA Centre in Brampton
and all matches will be broadcast worldwide to approximately 80 countries. The owners of the League,
Mr. Gurmeet Singh and Mr. Ashit Patel, as well as several of the international players have close ties to
children’s charities around the world. It seems only seemed fitting that Global T20 Canada would
welcome SickKids Foundation as its official charity.

Inaugural Global T20 Canada Shows Potential  of Twenty20 Cricket in North America

Strong performances by Canadian cricketers achieved key mandate of developing Canadian talent

Vancouver Knights’s victory Sunday in the Global T20 Canada (www.gt20.ca) championship match capped off a successful inaugural edition of the six-team league and provided glimpses of the potential of the first Twenty20 league to be fully staged in North America.

Played before a sellout festive crowd at Maple Leaf Cricket Club, the final, between Vancouver and Cricket West Indies B team, showcased the exciting Twenty20 form of cricket. On this stage, fittingly, a Canadian, Saad Bin Zafar made Canadian sporting history producing the performance of his career knocking in 79 runs to lead the Knights to the title, and the champion’s prize of C$500,000.

“Global T20 Canada brought the excitement of pro T20 cricket to Canada, along with many of the world’s top stars,” said Gurmeet Singh, Chairman, Global T20 Canada. “The final in front of a packed stadium and millions of fans watching via TV and streaming shows the sport’s potential not only in Canada, but also in North America, and we plan to achieve many more great milestones in future editions.”

City of Toronto celebrates renaming of Christie Pits ice rink in honour of Sid Smith

On January 15th, 2018, City Councillor Mike Layton (Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina) and City of Toronto staff officially renamed the skating rink at Christie Pits Park in honour of Sid Smith and Toronto’s hockey history. The renaming ceremony, a family-friendly event, gave the public an opportunity to celebrate the newly named Sid Smith Artificial Ice Rink with Toronto Maple Leafs alumni and participate in free skating at Christie Pits Park.

In addition to skating, attendees were able to view a photo display of some of Smith’s memorable moments from his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Special appearances by Toronto Maple Leafs alumni who knew Smith included Dick Duff. Duff won two Stanley cups in 1962 and 1963 and is an inductee of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Smith was his team captain.

“It is my pleasure to name the rink in Christie Pits in honour of Sid Smith, the eighth captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sid Smith lived in the neighbourhood and would often return from practice with the Leafs to play shinny with his neighbours,” said Councillor Layton. “As a player, he exhibited many of the qualities all persons participating in sport should strive for. Generations of skaters and hockey fans will now have the opportunity to share the ice with Sid on Sid Smith Rink.”

Stanley Cup Immortalized in Downtown Ottawa

David McGuinty, Member of Parliament (Ottawa South), today took part in the official unveiling of the Lord Stanley’s Gift Monument to mark Canada 150, the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup and the 100th anniversary of the National Hockey League.

Mr. McGuinty attended the unveiling on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. He was accompanied by Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa; George Hunter, Vice-President and Chair of the Board of Lord Stanley Memorial Monument Inc.; and representatives from the Ottawa Senators and the National Hockey League.

The Monument, located at the corner of Sparks and Elgin streets, is sure to delight both residents and visitors as they admire this inspiring work and learn about the importance of the Stanley Cup to our country’s sport heritage.

The unveiling of the impressive Monument is timely. The Government of Canada is in the process of installing a family skating rink on Parliament Hill, in partnership with the Ottawa International Hockey Festival. Canadians and visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to lace up their skates and participate in free skate time, as well as a variety of winter, cultural and sport activities.
