Celebrity husband and wife yoga instructor team Colleen Saidman Yee and Rodney Yee will be leading the sunset yoga session on Thursday, July 27 @ Exhibition Place, Toronto.
“The First Lady of Yoga” (New York Times), Colleen Saidman Yee is a successful author, yoga instructor and host of the podcast Talking Yoga. Rodney Yee was one of the first yoga instructors to star in and offer instructional yoga videos letting those without access to a studio, practice at home. The power couple has multiple yoga practices in New York, online and both teach workshops around the world. With over half a century of combined yoga experience, Colleen and Rodney have taught some of the world’s biggest celebrity yogis including Madonna, Serena Williams and Bon Jovi. Colleen and Rodney are also co-founders of Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation, a non-profit bringing complementary yoga and meditation into the mainstream healthcare system.
In a brief chat with Usha Pudukkotai, the power couple shared their views, ideas and thoughts about their journey with Yoga.
Colleen said her journey started in 1984 at the urging of a roommate who took her to a class in New York City that left her feeling intimidated and yet remarkably good. Still, she continued other forms of exercise (including running, boxing, and basketball) until 1994, when she was forced to undergo back surgery. Since then, her commitment to her yoga practice has been unwavering.
When asked about her practice style, Colleen says that she’s been teaching yoga for over 20 years. She likes to experiment, including doing yoga moves to rock-n-roll music. She has studied with many instructors including Iyengar. Her style comprises of all aspects of yoga practice: Asana, pranayama, breathe work, and meditation. During our tele-conversation, she also mentioned that any student or disciple who’s willing to try will certainly make a huge difference in their lives with yoga practice.
Rodney Yee, who’s been practicing yoga for over 35 years, has a special regard for the motherland of yoga, which is India. His message is to our readers is that yoga is for anybody and everybody. Their method of instruction includes online classes, videos and tours across the world.
